Never share such personal information until you receive a written notice that includes the collector’s full name, licence number and a clear statement of the debt. Hang up, block the number, and report the call to the ACCC or the relevant state regulator. If the debt is legitimate, the agency must follow up in writing – otherwise you can ignore it and consider registering the number on the national Do Not Call list.

For almost a week, I received two daily calls from a private number, plus calls from this line. The caller pretended to be a Credit Corp debt collector, but when I asked for details, the woman was evasive and gave incorrect personal information. Very dodgy—best to ignore this number.
