The voice on the line is often vague, refuses to identify the company, and pushes for your date of birth, address or bank info. Never share such personal information until you receive a written notice that includes the collector’s full name, licence number and a clear statement of the debt. Hang up, block the number, and report the call to the ACCC or the relevant state regulator. If the debt is legitimate, the agency must follow up in writing – otherwise you can ignore it and consider registering the number on the national Do Not Call list.
