I got a legit text from NatWest saying my cheque book hadn't been used for over a year and advising me to always verify with the bank ✅.
We almost lost a large sum, but since we hadn’t written a cheque in ages we checked with NatWest. The fraudster had a perfect copy of our cheque book and a signature almost identical to ours.
My RBS account (part of NatWest) gave me a five‑and‑a‑half hour window to verify a cheque’s authenticity; I could easily confirm it, though the sender didn’t identify themselves.
The text felt safe, asking for confirmation that a cheque payment could be authorised. Though it wasn’t crystal clear the message came from NatWest, I saw the cheque pending as a debit that morning via online banking, with the correct payee and amount.
According to the message, NatWest is reaching out to confirm the clearance of a high‑value cheque on my account, which should arrive in two stages: an initial notice of dispatch followed by a transaction confirmation.

This morning I received two messages supposedly from NatWest stating that a £2,500 cheque would be taken from my account. I don’t bank with them, so it’s obviously a fraud.
A text claimed a NatWest cheque would be returned unless I confirmed it by a deadline; a bank wouldn’t call from a mobile, so it’s definitely a scam in my view.
A text allegedly from the bank asked for authorisation of a cheque – it’s a scam, so block the number. The mobile number the message was sent to isn’t linked to the supposed bank account.
This is clearly a scam pretending to be NatWest, demanding permission to debit funds against a cheque. Since I don’t hold an account with them, it was easy to spot, and anyone with a NatWest account should verify whether they actually wrote a £35,000 cheque… block the number.
It may seem odd, but this is NatWest Bank calling to verify a transaction on your account.
