He then spoke very quickly on a poor connection, asking me to repeat things and to slow down. When he probed my account balances I made up figures, which made me suspect the scam. He requested my email, and I said they should already have it. He put me on hold, and I ended the call.

Looks like a payment‑fraud scam.
A recent message asked me to confirm a payment for Argos, but I never placed any order – clearly a scam.
I was sent a text claiming I’d ordered £299.50 from Asda with an authentication code and a phone number. Knowing it was a scam, I ignored it.
Received a text supposedly from Barclays about an Argos purchase, urging me to call this number if I didn’t recognise it. I suspect both the message and the number are fraudulent.
I had a similar experience – probably a scam message.
