Turns out the number was a spoof, pretending to arrange a smart‑meter fitting for our British Gas account. When I asked for my account number they couldn’t provide it, and after I mentioned we’d left British Gas four years ago they hung up in a fit – total scam, mate.

Sounds like a scam to me, mate. I don't run a business, so I shouldn't be getting calls claiming they're on behalf of British Gas Business. Five years ago a former employer used my personal number as a contact for their British Gas Business account, but I've not worked there for ages and they removed my details long ago. I even checked with my ex‑employer, who confirmed they’ve taken my info out and asked British Gas not to contact me. So this SMS Plc thing feels dodgy – I doubt they're actually linked to British Gas Business or got my number from them.
