They tried to phish for information, became upset when I questioned their identity, and then hung up.

Expertadvies
Automated voices greeting callers with 'please hold while we reconnect you' on incoming calls is a dead giveaway for tricksters probing for live responses. These persistent nuisances, often rotating numbers from the Portsmouth area, ignore TPS rules and resort to harassment when challenged. Reports highlight phishing attempts to extract personal info, with callers hanging up under scrutiny. Block the lot, report to Action Fraud, and never engage—silence starves them. If they've left voicemails, delete without listening. Staying vigilant curbs their success; registering with TPS afresh can help filter out more.

Although I didn’t answer, the voicemail played an automated American‑accented message asking me to hold while they tried to reconnect; similar numbers from the Portsmouth area also called.
The call went straight to voicemail, playing a recorded greeting that said “Thanks for calling, please wait while we connect you.” I hadn’t dialled them; they called me, so the message made no sense. No connection was made, likely because it hit voicemail. Their practice isn’t TPS‑compliant. They keep ringing from various numbers all starting 023 9388 2***, so I expect to have to block hundreds of numbers before they’re finally stopped.
I received six consecutive calls from this number and several similar ones.
The numbers resemble previous ones; the answering machine caught the call, indicating a scam that won’t receive a reply from me, so they’re merely wasting time.
