Received a message claiming my Nationwide account payee was set up and urging me to ring a 020 number straight away if it wasn’t – obviously a scam, blocked it, mate.

Szakértői vélemény
Ever wondered why these calls feel so eerily personal yet utterly dodgy? These interactions reveal a classic scam pattern, with fraudsters impersonating trusted entities like Nationwide and HMRC to extract sensitive details. The callers often display polished accents or insider knowledge to build credibility, but inconsistencies—such as pushing for OTPs or hasty card replacements—betray their intent. Victims report small financial hits, like unauthorised Tesco spends, underscoring the peril. Stay vigilant: never share codes or confirm details; hang up and verify directly with your bank via official channels. Report to Action Fraud to curb these nuisances, especially for the vulnerable. Blocking helps, but awareness is your best defence.

A woman calling herself Amy Barnett claimed to be with Nationwide’s fraud unit, insisted she was linked to my bank, said she’d cancelled my cards and would send replacements by courier, and urged me not to destroy the old ones. She sounded convincing, even directing me to check her LinkedIn profile, and tried to obtain an OTP for a payment. Luckily only a small Tesco transaction went through; the rest were blocked. She must have been posing as an employee of a company I use, like Coopers or Cosifeet.
It appears to be a scam – they pretended to be from HMRC and said legal action was forthcoming.
The caller knew my name, address and postcode, which is alarming; I told them I was transferring the call to police before they hung up. Authorities need to act, especially for vulnerable people.
A woman rang me today; when I answered her English was almost unintelligible and it was very irritating.
