Expert Opinion
Like a wolf in sheep's clothing, these calls masquerade as the Canada Revenue Agency to snatch personal data. The callers often request your SIN, birthdate, or address and insist you call a toll‑free number that looks official. Remember, the real CRA never initiates contact by phone for tax debts or personal details; they always send a written notice first. Hang up immediately if you feel pressured, and never share personal information over the phone. Verify any claim by calling the official CRA number from their website, consider blocking the spoofed number, and report the incident to the Canadian Anti‑Fraud Centre to help stop the scam.

A week after initially receiving a call from this number with no one on the other end, I finally got a call that connected, and a woman introduced herself with a badge number, claiming to be from the CRA debt department. She asked for someone else, and when I told her I wasn't that person, she requested that I pass along a message, asking the individual to call back and provide their SIN. When I questioned her about the legitimacy of the call, she insisted that she had dialed the correct number and suggested I check my caller ID.
