This is a legitimate number, which called me twice. After returning the call, I found out it was American Express contacting me about a missed payment on one of my cards, which I had neglected to send. Thankfully, they were helpful and not rude.
American Express number: legit or scam? - +1 888-258-3741 ((888) 258-3741)
Summary — +18882583741
Expert Opinion
Like a disguised messenger, the call from +18882583741 can feel trustworthy yet hide malicious intent. The number historically appears on the back of American Express Blue cards, so many users treat it as legitimate. However, spoofers frequently mimic that line, prompting callers to request card details or payments. Always cross‑check the digits on the back of your card or on the official American Express website before replying. Never disclose personal or financial information to an unsolicited voice, even if the caller claims fraud alerts. Use a callback to the known 800‑528‑4800 number, enable carrier‑level spam filters, and report suspicious activity to your card issuer’s fraud department.

Fortunately, I had a positive experience with this number, which I found on the back of my AMEX card, and used it to verify my balance a couple of months ago. However, it appears that AMEX has since updated their customer service number, which is now available on their website, and I was able to use the new number, 800-528-4800, to check my balance. It seems that the old number is no longer in use, and after conducting some research, I understand why they made the change.
