A debt collector called, but the debt was unknown to me

Expert Opinion
Late at night, the phone rings and a voice claims to be from a debt‑collection outfit. The safest move is to hang up without sharing personal data like Social Security or banking details. If the call seems to be from the National Recovery Agency or a similar collector, let it go to voicemail and note the time. Register the number with your carrier’s call‑blocking service, and consider adding it to a third‑party blocklist. Report persistent harassment to the FTC’s Do Not Call Registry and to your state’s consumer‑protection agency. Keep records of each call – dates, times, and any recorded messages – to aid any future dispute.
