Never ignore a letter that references a credit application you never made. Verify the caller using the official phone number listed on the bank’s website before you share any personal data. If the number matches the Synchrony Bank fraud department, call the verified line and ask for a reference number; provide only the last four digits of your SSN if absolutely required. Immediately place a fraud alert with the three major credit bureaus and consider a credit freeze. Keep copies of all correspondence, and report suspicious letters to the FTC and your state attorney general. Stay vigilant, and remember that legitimate fraud departments will never pressure you to give full SSN or payment info over the phone.
