Rather than verifying the number through official channels, some individuals have resorted to calling back numbers that could potentially be used by scammers to gather personal information.
I recieved a voicemail from someone claiming to be Andrew in the Capital One Fraud dept, he left a message stating someone is trying to open a credit card in my name, and gave me a case#, I was asked to call back to an incomplete ph# with a specific case number, but I didnt.
Probably, Jay was a shill, but you have been spamming with diffrent names and that's not cool, you should stop and quit.
Capital One has confirmed that this is indeed a scam, as they do not use this number, and it has been advised to report it as such.
Tonight, I recived a call on my cell phone from an unrecoginzed number, so I didnt answer. The message from a person claiming to be "Ralph" said he was calling from Capital One and that it wasnt a sales call. He asked me to call back ASAP at 800-239-7054. When I called the number, I was imediatly asked for my 16-digit account number.
This morning, I received a call from someone claiming to be 'Shannon' from Capital One's fraud department, requesting a callback; however, after investigating, it was determined that the provided number was invalid and not associated with Capital One
This incident is clearly a scam, as I had only applied for the card and hadn't received it, making it impossible for there to be any fraud related to it; the caller's polished demeanor was likely an attempt to sound legitimate.

Contrary to what others have stated, this number is actually used by Capital One to verify my information due to a 7-year fraud alert on my credit. They have called me from this number twice, once when I initially applied for my card and again when I requested a limit increase. Both times, my requests were successfully processed.
It seems that professional help is needed, and I have reported the posts to ensure protection.
