Ever wondered why that familiar 570‑831‑1296 keeps lighting up your phone? The number is widely reported as a source of social security impostor scams. Callers often claim to be SSA representatives, ask for SSN, DOB, or banking details, and pressure you to call back on a different toll‑free line. The real SSA never initiates contact by phone for personal data; they only send letters or use secure online portals. Before sharing anything, hang up, verify the caller against the official 1‑800‑772‑1213 number, and report the incident to the FTC or your state AG. Blocking the number and monitoring your credit can further limit exposure.
