The connection between the IRS and the Social Security Website is unclear

Ever wonder why a one‑time password keeps pinging a random Baltimore number? It appears the Social Security online portal is routing 2FA codes to 410‑504‑7440, a phone that isn’t yours. This is likely a systemic glitch or a spoofed number used by scammers to harvest login credentials. Until the agency fixes the routing, avoid using the portal for sensitive actions, verify the URL (look for *.ssa.gov or login.gov), and request a mail‑based reset instead of text codes. Report each incident to the SSA via their official contact numbers and consider placing a fraud alert on your credit files. Stay cautious and double‑check any unexpected verification requests.

Following a successful login to the Business Services Online page using an old SSA login, a 2FA text was sent to this number, leading to concerns about IRS security.
On August 8, 2024, this number was received, but it does not belong to the recipient.
I received the same message and number as previously reported
SS sent a code to this number, but its not my cell phone number
Same thing happen to me, the website say's they start at 4:15am, i'll try calling back, maybe they can help
I used my SS name the first time and login.gov the second time, I just noticed that they are using the Id.me, the SS has a disclaimer that they dont operate Id.me, is it posible that its a central number that all codes go through?
Were you directed to use id.me, or perhaps an alternative like login.gov or signing in with your Social Security credentials? Some sites incorporating two-factor authentication will initially display a fake number to contact, anticipating the scammer's ignorance, as I've observed with Chase for my Amazon account
Did you recieve the pass code on your phone, even though it showed that number?
This number, 410-504-7440, is also linked to my social security account.
After logging in, i recieved a message saying a passcode was being sent to that number, it was quite suprising
While inputting information into the SSI system, it indicated that all data was being sent to this particular number
Upon further investigation, I discovered that I had inadvertently logged into a demonstration page for Business Services for Social Security, which raises serious concerns about the security of my login credentials. Fortunately, I was able to find the correct link and verify my information, including my cell number and two-factor authorization.
Rather then calling this number, try contacting them threw a oficial website, thats how you can be shure you arnt talking to a scammer but the actual SSA.
I've had a similiar experiance, which started with an email that contained some suspicious content;
Similar to previously reported incidents, logging into SSA led to a text message with a one-time code sent to this number, resulting in the suspension of online access until a reset code could be mailed, and attempts to contact the number were met with a Verizon message stating the recipient was unavailable.
It is essential to notify them of the issue so they can initiate an investigation; without prior knowledge, they cannot take action.
I tryed to access my account, but the access code was sent to a diffrent number, 410 504 7440, which is not mine, SS need to investige this number asap
On 8.18.20, I experienced a similar issue, eventually gaining access after multiple login attempts.
This phone number receives a confirmation text when attempting to access my account, indicating that it is not my own.
Research indicates that this number is associated with a private party in Pikesville, MD, although it is possible that the number is being spoofed. A callback resulted in a voicemail that only stated the number without identifying the caller. It would be expected that a legitimate caller, such as an SS office, would include their identity in the voicemail greeting. The SS administration advises checking information online or contacting them directly.
Personal SS information was accessed, and a similar message was received, with a mysterious text message sent to an unknown number, raising concerns about identity and security.
Recently, i experinced similiar issue with this number, apparently its assocaited with lots of SS offices in Baltimore area, definatly not my number
Same thing happend to me, i dont know why they keep calling.
It seems we had a similiar experiance, what was your course of action regarding this?
Whilst acessing my Social Security account, a message appeard saying a one-time password was being sent to a cell phone number, which wasnt mine, its really distrubing, and i dont know whats going on
I've had a similar experience with this number.
Upon logging into my SS account, a new cell number, 410-504-740, was listed, which does not belong to me.
