Expert Opinion
If you get a call from +12026474000 claiming to be the U.S. Department of State, treat it with suspicion. The number is not the official State Department line (202‑647‑2000) and callers usually play a recorded greeting or a series of beeps to verify a live line. Scammers often use this spoof to harvest personal info or push gift‑card payments. Hang up, don’t provide any details, and block the number. If you’re actually expecting a government call, verify the number on the official website or call back using the known State Department number. Staying cautious keeps you safe from fraud.

Having worked for the State Department, I can confirm that this number is not affiliated with us; the actual number to reach us is 202-647-2000, and our caller ID would display 'Dept of ST', not 'Bill Once'. The introductory message when calling back is a fake, attempting to replicate our Help Desk message. When I pressed the options to speak with an operator, the woman's response was suspicious, warning me to be cautious with unknown calls, which seemed ironic given the context. It's clear that this is a scam number, so it's best to block the call.
Before 8 a.m. East Coast time, this number called me four times; upon investigation, it appears to be the Department of State's main phone number, which I suspect is being spoofed
This caller seems to be a random, useless contact that I'm unfamiliar with.
The intention behind this call is to deceive individuals into sending money via gift cards.
The notion that a Department of State employee would discuss sensitive information online is implausible. This number is purportedly for passport assistance, and it's unlikely that government employees would publicly disclose anti-terrorist strategies or plans. The calls, though possibly weird, are what they are, and it's rational to view this as either a trolling attempt or a breach of security.
Apparently, Dept of State guy, your actions have given people with ill intentions the opportunity to change their phone numbers, lol!
Apparently, the purpose of the call is to verify phone numbers potentially linked to organized crime or terrorist activity, with the series of beeps indicating a computer system checking the line's activity and connections
As someone who doesn't answer calls from unknown numbers, I was surprised to find that a friend who works for the DoS sometimes calls me from this number - it's possible that the calls are legitimate, so don't jump to conclusions
It's unsettling to find that others have reported similar experiences with this number, which has called me twice without any apparent reason
Apparently, the purpose of the call is to verify the status of phone numbers potentially linked to organized crime or terrorist activities, using a computer system that sends random dial tones to check if the line is active and to determine the number of connections
The claim of being from the Department of State is suspicious, especially since they had my cell phone number without my knowledge, and the call consisted of only random beeps
This number is supposibly the Department of State
